The effect of illumination on the working efficiency

Abstract
The poor illumination in industry is not only a cause of accident but also a factor which interfers with working effieiency.
This experimental study was carried out to see the change in visual function and working efficiency under conditions of various illuminations.
The results obtained inn this study area as follows:
1) The flicker fusion frequency which represents the value of fatigue decreases significantly when the illumination is reduced from 500 lux to 400 lux.
2) The near-point is nearest under 400 lux and as the illumination gets weaker, it moves further.
3) There is a close relationship between the pupil size and illumination.
Therefore, a formula y£½15.83x^(-0.2703) is derived from the relation.
4) Visual acuity clearly decreases with poor illumination of below 200 lux but there is no sign of imporvement in visual acuity over 200 lux.
5) The visual field is also influenced by the change in illumination.
6) Illumination of over 600 lux is needed in superprecision work, over 400 lux in precision work and over 200 lux in ordinary work.
